What is a hashtag?

The hashtag (appears with the symbol “#”) is an essential part of social media. Basically, it is a designation / label or categorization for content. Hashtags help with the search and can be particularly useful in marketing

  • Helps to quickly find content on a specific topic
  • Used in social media like Twitter and Facebook
  • Are messages / posts added and can be searched

This is what the hashtags are all about

A hashtag looks something like this: #Saying. These labels, marked with the double cross, are mainly used in social media. They originally became known on Twitter. Later on, hashtags could be used on other social platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, Pinterest and formerly Google+. Anyone who shares content on a relevant topic can add the hashtag label to their message. Others who search for this topic can search for this label to find other messages on the same social media platform. For example, hashtags are used for significant events. They prove to be of great value for tracking current messages. News messages can also be extended and supplemented in this way, for example by citizens / amateurs. Hashtags also offer the public the opportunity to express commonalities or feelings or to announce an event. For the latter, the city, building or event can be used as a hashtag. Hashtags are therefore not limited to big news. Marketers and entrepreneurs have also recognized the great opportunity and developed inventive methods for using hashtags. In principle, hashtag strings can also be seen as meta comments or meta tags. With the hashtags it is possible to put certain statements into a special context. Especially as captions for Instagram these have established themselves

How to use a hashtag

Its use in practice is not difficult, but there are a few rules to follow. First of all, no spaces are allowed with hashtags. A hashtag can be a single word, an abbreviation, an invented combination of letters and numbers or a phrase. If it is a phrase, as mentioned above, no spaces are allowed between the words. All letters and numbers must also converge in a hash tag without spaces. The hashtag must not contain any punctuation or symbols (except the # symbol at the beginning). Numbers are fine, but they must have at least one letter with the numbers – hashtags cannot consist of numbers only. You simply start with the # symbol. So a hashtag basically consists of a word or phrase with a double cross symbol in front of it. Anyone can create a hashtag at any time. Over the years, countless hashtags have been created, some of which have gone “viral”. When creating a hashtag, you can give free rein to your creativity, and ideally try to make it unique. Usually you add it at the end of messages. However, you can add hashtags anywhere in the meaningful message, as long as it remains readable. By the way, there is no “hashtag police”. So basically there is nothing stopping you from using an already used hashtag. However, this would lead to confusion in practice. If the desired hashtag is already in use, it is best to return to the idea generation process. You should also make sure that the desired hashtag does not match a username that exists in the social network. Hashtags should be easy to remember and understand. Hashtags should also be as short as possible. This is especially important for Twitter, where you only have a limited number of characters available. It is best if a hashtag is an understandable word, phrase or abbreviation. Hashtags that are too long, hard to pronounce or hard to remember will also be difficult for people to use. You cant go wrong if its short and easy to remember
