What is a backlink?

A backlink is a link from one website to another. Search engines such as Google use the backlink as a ranking signal. This is because when one website is linked to another, it means that they consider the content of the latter to be remarkable. In SEO, high-quality backlinks can help to improve both the ranking and the visibility of a page in the search engine results.

  • Is a backlink from one page to another
  • Is incoming link, which can be of different quality
  • Plays a role in search engine optimization

How do backlinks work?

Backlinks play an important role in the search engine algorithm, in search engine optimization and in the overall strategy for the growth of a website. The easiest way to imagine backlinks would be conversations between websites. For example, a blogger A writes a very interesting article about a sports event. Another blogger B links to As article if she shares his perspective. Since she writes about the topic on her well-known website for online magazines, a backlink is created to As article. Since the online magazine is very popular, many other websites will also link to her article. This increases the authority of the magazine and As article gets a valuable backlink from a reputable website. So basically it is a win win situation. There are two basic types of backlinks, and one is more valuable than the other. A nofollow tag tells search engines to ignore a link. These links do not pass value from one page to another. Therefore, they are usually not useful for improving search rank or visibility. Dofollow links are the type of backlinks that everyone wants to have. It should be remembered that those coming from “reputable” places have the greatest value. This type of backlink can help to improve search engine ranking. However, there are dofollow links that are classified as bad or even “toxic”. These links come from suspicious websites or are created by violating the search engines terms of use. This can lead Google to penalize the website or even remove the indexing. It should be remembered that it is not the number of backlinks that matters, but the quality that makes the difference in the ranking.

How to get a backlink?

Creating (high-quality) backlinks to a page sometimes takes time and effort. It is often successful to write so-called guidebook articles. In this way, one usually receives a good response and thus also backlinks. These are very long posts of several thousand words, covering every aspect of the topic. Another good possibility is to leave guest posts on other blogs and websites. To do this, contact influencers in your niche or industry, for example, and let them know about an article on your website to which they might want to link. Consult the influencers in your industry and send them a link, and no doubt they will link back to your site. Its a good idea to add your site to their social media profiles. You can still create e.g. “How to” posts, infographics or posts with embedded videos. Such formats usually receive more backlinks than standard posts. You can also start doing competitive backlink research. To do this, you need to see the backlinks of your competitors, which rank well. How can you check your backlinks? There are several backlink monitoring tools that you can use to check the inbound links of your website, including the Google Search Console. Keeping an eye on your backlinks is always very important. According to the Google Webmaster guidelines, you should ask the owners of toxic sites to remove their links from their site. If you dont do this, Google may even penalize your site and your ranking will drop in search results. If you regularly track your backlink profile, you will know a lot about the value of your website and realize a not unimportant part of the SEO strategy of your website.
